THE LIVING HOPE AND PRESERVATION! “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time,” (1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV). How do I know that I will make it to heaven? That’s a legitimate question and God’s word gives us the answer in many different places in the bible. I am going to deal with that question just from verse 5 at this time. We already know from this passage that we get “born again” and have The LIVING HOPE because of God’s great mercy and the payment for our sins by the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. If you have acknowledged that you are a sinner, have repented and have accepted Christ’s payment for your sin then you are born again and God has given you a Living Hope with an inheritance. REMEMBER THIS, you have not done anything to provide for your salvation…God the Father & Jesus the Son did it all. And there is absolutely nothing you can do to keep yourself saved. God does it all.
Verse 5 says you are by faith, “shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” The word “shielded” means, “to guard, protect by a military guard, either to prevent hostile invasion or to keep the inhabitants of a besieged city from flight.” A biblical commentator by the name of Wuest put it this way, “While our inheritance is being kept guarded in heaven under the watchful eye of God, we are being garrisoned about by God’s protecting care for it.” Jesus’ work on the cross and our acceptance of that work gives us a new birth and brings us into God’s kingdom. Once we are in that kingdom the King guards us and protects us and keeps us safe and secure. No invading hordes of hell will ever be able to rip us out of the kingdom. We are shielded by God’s power. We are weak but God is Omnipotent or all-powerful. God is able to save us and keep us safe. Rest in the power and work of God. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
