THE LIVING HOPE INHERITANCE! “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time,” (1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV). The Living Hope we receive in Christ also comes with an inheritance from God. I don’t know about you but I have no hope of an inheritance from anyone on this earth. But I do have a Living Hope that comes with a spiritual inheritance set aside for me in heaven. And what a glorious inheritance it is. Notice how the Apostle Peter describes it:
Our inheritance can never PERISH. The Greek word means it is, “not liable to corruption or decay, it is imperishable.” What a difference from the stuff of planet earth. Often 401K retirement plans have vanished like a morning fog. Not too long ago, more recent and often than we like to remember, houses decreased in value at an astonishing rate. Not too long ago people went to work one day and discovered that long-held jobs no longer existed. Companies that were trademarks on the American scene are now just memories. Earthly things come and go. Even our present earth & heavens will one day pass away according to 2 Peter 3:10-13. But our inheritance in heaven will never perish.
Our inheritance in heaven will never SPOIL. The Greek word means “not defiled, unsoiled.” When I see this verse I think of my refrigerator. You know what I mean. We put things in there thinking they will remain unspoiled and then a few days or later we take out the milk and other things and guess what? And then there are those things we have that give us such a thrill…like a new car…and then one day a rust spot shows up or someone defiles the vehicle in traffic. Stuff here on earth spoils in many ways and your mind can fill in the example. That will not happen in heaven. For all eternity, the inheritance God has for us will remain in a state of perfection. What a glorious thought about the living hope. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
