HEADLINE! WOMAN AGE 90 BECAME PREGNANT AND GAVE BIRTH! Even the thought of this caused some to laugh, “Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’” (Genesis 17:17 NIV). “So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’” (Genesis 18:12 NIV). Sometimes people have a tendency to laugh at God’s promises because they seem impossible. For God to promise Abraham and Sarah the birth of a son when Abraham was age 100 and Sarah was age 90 seemed a promise impossible to fulfill. But God’s reply put things in perspective, “Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son,’” (Genesis 18:14). And right on schedule Isaac was born (Genesis 21:1-3)
As one reads the Old Testament Scriptures from a Christian perspective one might be tempted to fault the unbelief of Abraham and Sarah in this situation. But I wonder if we are not like them in many ways. God has filled His bible with many wonderful promises and yet Christians so often don’t accept them, rely on them, or in practice don’t believe them. Maybe because we don’t see how those promises could actually come true. Some writers say that there are as many as 7,000 promises God has made in the bible. I don’t know how many there actually are but this I do know from God’s Word and personal experience; if God makes a promise He will keep it. The Apostle Paul said this, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken to us to the glory of God,” (2 Corinthians 1:20). To Abraham and Sarah the birth of Isaac was proof to them of the glorious God they served and his ability to do anything He wanted to do and fulfill every promise he would ever give them. To us as Christians the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus on our behalf is all the proof we need of the ability of God to do whatever He wants to do and to fulfill every promise He has ever given.
