TIME, TRAVEL, OBEDIENCE & BLESSING!
TIME, TRAVEL, OBEDIENCE & BLESSING! From the words of Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” until Genesis 12:1 a lot of time has passed in the history of the human race. How much time will be debated until the Lord returns to set up His Kingdom. But now the bible brings its focus from mankind in general to one historical figure who will be used to change the course of human history. God chose this man, directed his life, and gave him a promise that still affects the world today.
“The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you,’” (Genesis 12:1-3 NIV). I am sure Abram (later changed to Abraham) did not understand all the implications of this conversation with God at this point in his life. I don’t believe anyone would. But give Abram credit, “Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran,” (Genesis 12:4 NIV). My wife and I moved from Panama City Beach, Florida to Delray Beach, Florida, a distance of 540 miles, and we were about the same age as Abram was when he moved. And I never want to do anything like that again. An experience like that will give you a new appreciation for Abram’s move. Abram had already made the move from Ur to Harran; a distance of about 600 miles. Now God was telling him to move another 400 miles to Canaan. He was obedient to God; he gathered his family and servants, his pack animals, and possessions and started the long journey to Canaan and eventually arrived (Genesis 12:5). At least in our move we had U-haul trucks & cars. We would not have survived packing our stuff on animals and neither would the animals.
Because of Abraham’s obedience to God, in spite of all the hardships involved, all people on earth have been blessed even though most do not realize it. It was through Abraham that Jesus was humanly descended and provided salvation for a fallen human race. Abraham is considered by millions of people to be the spiritual father of three religions; Jewish, Muslim, and Christianity. In addition it was through Abraham’s line, the Jewish people, that God chose to reveal to us His written revelation, the Bible. And down through history it has proven to be true that those who bless the descendants of Abraham God blesses and those who curse the Jewish people God will curse. “Father Abraham” is not only a song kids sing but a name that is revered to this day among many nations. Obedience to God, in spite of hardships, does bring God’s blessings. And I don’t know about you but I can use all of God’s blessings that I can get.
