ADAM & EVE: FACT OR FICTION? As we know from God’s Word in Genesis 1:1 God created the heavens and the earth and then He begin to fill them with all kinds of things including human beings. God forms and then He fills. He creates a place and then He fills the place. God’s Word tells us, “Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being,” (Genesis 2:7). I am happy to learn from God’s Word where I came from and I am happy to learn that I didn’t evolve from a piece of slime floating on some dirty water or from a monkey swinging on a tree limb or that I happened by chance to become a human being or in some other manner concocted by “great” minds who reject the power of a revealed God. The book of Genesis is a book of revealed beginnings. It answers a lot of questions about life and the history of mankind and God’s interaction with His creation. It is not “fake news” but rather God’s truth revealed to mankind. And it involves the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly.
The God revealed in the book of Genesis is a good and loving God who is concerned about His creation and the human beings He created. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him,’” (Genesis 2:18 NIV) and “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man,” (Genesis 2:22 NIV). Now I don’t want to insult your intelligence as you read this chapter of God’s book but it is obvious the kind of relationship that God intended for Adam and Eve to have and the plan He wanted them to follow. God in His loving care for the human race provides for our needs through His plan and program. One man for one woman for a lifetime is God’s normal plan. A harmonious relationship in a closeness of body, soul, and spirit without shame or guilt is what God intends for husbands and wives (man & woman). As God’s Word says, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame,” (Genesis 2:24-25 NIV). It is only through the corruption of God’s plan for human beings that the world has fallen into such great shame and sin today.
I am thankful for the wife of my youth and our many years of marriage and God’s plan for our lives. It is only by God’s grace we are still alive and only through God’s grace that we have endured the ups and downs of life that everyone faces. God had a plan when He created the world and He had a plan when He instituted marriage. God wrote the original marriage manual which we call the Bible and when we follow its’ principles God can do amazing things in the lives of sinful human beings. And though Adam & Eve got off to a wonderful start in life a rocky road soon appeared because of their disobedience to God just as it does in our lives when we are disobedient to God. But as Genesis 3 reveals God is never caught by surprise and God has an answer to our disobedience. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:16 NIV).
