“THE TYRANNY OF THE URGENT!” How’s it going? Here we are at the end of the first month of the year and we should ask ourselves about how the year is going. Are those promises and commitments you made at the beginning of the year being kept or have they become lost in the busy activities of daily life? Have you taken action to get on the road to fulfillment of those goals you set for this year? If not, why not? Life just has a way of making us take care of all the things that “pop-up” on a daily basis instead of letting us get done what is really important. It is called the “tyranny of the urgent” (not original with me) and we all experience it. In fact most people live by that principle. As I review last year I look eyeball to eyeball with all the things hanging from last year and now January of this year has some things hanging as well. On the other hand I look at all the things that have been accomplished, and some are really important, and I rejoice in them. So this is a good time for a checkup and a good time to take action on what is really important to God and us.

On the simpler side I have let “the tyranny of the urgent” keep me from doing some inside house painting that really needs to be done. I think I said the same thing last year at this time. And I have had all kinds of excuses about other more “important stuff” and not enough hours in the day. But recently I committed to starting my painting project (again) and it is my estimation that at the rate I am going and all the excuses I can muster I will probably finish the job about the time I step into eternity (don’t go theological on me). But my wife is happy I have committed to starting (again) and considering I am going to start with our bedroom I am sure she will be pushing me to finish; talk about “tyranny of the urgent!” I have other things on my agenda for this year both for Christian ministry and personal life that must be taken care of this year. Like everyone else in life I need to make sure I make plans and carry them out so things do get accomplished and the “tyranny of the urgent” doesn’t control me. That means regular checkups. So how is this year going for you? It might be wise on this last day of January to stop for a moment, catch your breath, evaluate how things are going, and correct course if you need to. Or maybe it is time to pat yourself on the back and smile about how good you are doing this year.

Once again it is time to, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans,” (Proverbs 16:3 NIV). And it would not be bad to also remember what the Apostle Paul said, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 3:13-14 NIV). Maybe we haven’t taken hold of our lives the way we would like to in this year but the year is just beginning and we have an opportunity to set the days of January behind us and strain forward and press on both spiritually and in the mundane things of life. And on December 31 of this year, if the Lord permits, we can celebrate together in victory for what God has accomplished in us and through us for His kingdom as we put the “tyranny of the urgent behind us.” ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
