WHO OR WHAT CONTROLS OUR PRESIDENT? What does that question bring to mind for you? Is it the Media? Is it debatable political issues like immigration or tax cuts? Is it those on “Wall Street” or those big financial machines? God does give us some advice regarding “kings” or in our case the President. “In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him,” (Proverbs 21:1 NIV). The news media can spend a lot of time spreading unkind or untrue news about the President so as to sway people’s opinions against the President OR they may spend a lot of time trying to convince people a President is doing a great job when he isn’t. Opposing political parties can do the same and sometimes worse. But I must say I think these people are taking the wrong course of action pro or con. On the other hand I am not sure Christians have grasped the proper avenue of helping the President and our other leaders to fulfill their promises and obligations to the American people.

Our desire as Christians should be that the President’s heart is controlled by God so that God working through him may bring forth those things that bring a refreshing “steam of water” to those of us who love God. Most of us will never have the opportunity to speak to the President personally but we do have on a daily basis the pathway to affecting the control of the President’s heart. The Apostle Paul said, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior,” (1 Timothy 2:1-3 NIV). I fear too many Christians have been caught up in political “fights” and “political madness” and not enough Christians have focused on God’s method given to us to support those who serve in the political arena. God has given Americans the freedom to be involved in our country’s political process and having been granted that freedom by God we should be good citizens and carry out our duties. But God has given us an even greater way to affect greater change in our society that every Christian can be involved in.

Prayer can be brought before the throne of God 24 hours a day and Paul reminds us, “This is good and pleases God our Savior.” We should remember that the politicians are not our Savior, Jesus is. And God says that as we pray things can change, results can happen, so that we may “live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” We should also remember that, “The authorities that exist have been established by God,” (Romans 13:1 NIV). It does not matter whether we like or dislike the “kings and all those in authority;” God’s method for changing the direction of the “stream of water” flowing from the headquarters of political power is for God’s people to pray for them. The King (President) and others in authority (Congress) come and go. There is a turnover rate in the seat of power in the American governmental system; sometimes it is not fast enough for us. But God’s method for Christians to have a great effect in this arena never changes; prayer will change things and Christians can affect local government and the nation. So let us pray more effectively, fervently, and more often for all those in authority that steams of refreshing waters can flow forth to those who love God. Let us pray that the President’s heart will truly be “in the Lord’s hand.” ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
