WHAT ARE YOU LEAVING TO YOUR GRANDKIDS?

WHAT ARE YOU LEAVING TO YOUR GRANDKIDS? All of us who have grandchildren probably think about this at some point in our lives. And rightly so because God’s Word says, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,” (Proverbs 13:22 NIV). Most people probably think about this in terms of material items such as cash, stocks, bonds, houses, jewelry, etc.; items with monetary value. And certainly that is alright but do those things actually add the greatest value to the lives of our grandchildren? Those things often bring greater harm than good to people we may love. And what about people who are “dirt” poor through no fault of their own; how do they leave an inheritance of material things to their grandchildren? My point here is not to disparage wealth or poverty or to praise either but rather to cause us to reflect on the things of eternal value we may leave our grandchildren. Earthly wealth or poverty will eventually end but things of eternal value will not end.

As Christians we realize that our children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren are a blessing from God. And we love them even though we are not always pleased with their actions or lifestyles; nor is God always pleased with our actions or lifestyles. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away,” (Matthew 24:35 NIV). The physical world and all it contains will one day end. God has a greater plan that we read about in the bible. As Christian parents and grandparents we have a responsibility to invest in the lives of our children and grandchildren the things of God that will bear fruit for all eternity; the salvation of their souls and their godly living while on planet earth. This investment in our children and grandchildren begins with each one of us and our own godly living and growth into the image of Christ. Our inheritance for our “children’s children” doesn’t begin at our physical death but rather it is a living legacy that grows each day of our lives. How will our grandchildren remember us after we die? Will they remembers us as someone who continually showered on them material things and left them something in the way of material things or will they remember us as a person who helped to instill God’s presence in their lives? Will our children and grandchildren see God’s eternal Word present in our lives as an example to them and something that will impact them for eternity?

As I see posts of photos on Facebook from my friends with their children, grandchildren and great-children it brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart to see how God is blessing them at this time in their lives. And I need to pray more for my friends because God is giving them and my wife and me the challenge of producing a living inheritance in the lives of these precious souls right now. SO WHAT ARE WE LEAVING TO OUR GRANDKIDS? Hopefully, a good and Godly inheritance along with all those other good memories of life.("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
