WHAT DID YOU SAY? Sometimes you just have a hard time believing what someone has said. And sometimes what comes out of the mouth of Christians is astonishing. Christians use language today that just a few years ago would have been considered vulgar. Can it be that our generation of Christians has been too overly affected by the world’s vulgarity? And I have to believe that if our language has been affected then maybe our thinking has been affected as well. In Proverbs 10:11 (NIV) we read, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,” so I have to think that our words reflect our righteousness or holiness before the Lord; and that what God really expects to come from our mouth is words that help others to find the true “fountain of life” the Lord Jesus Christ.
God’s Word, as expressed by James, says, “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” (James 3:10-11 NIV). Language is important. The words we use to express the thoughts and intents of our hearts should honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Before we speak maybe we should ask the question, “Would Jesus say this? Would Jesus use these words?” I wonder if in trying to fit into the culture and using the culture’s language we haven’t lost our way and our own words no longer bring the desired impact on those around us. We sound more like the world and less like Christ.
God’s Word says, “Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,” (Proverbs 10:13 NIV). Words fill the airwaves today via radio, TV, phones and in many other ways. Words also flow through Facebook and all the other social media of our day. I must say that I am often surprised what comes across my screen on Facebook via words, photos and videos. And I ask myself, “Is this really coming from a Christian?” When people see what is posted, especially from Christians, the question remains, “Does this really come from the mouth of the righteous; is this really wisdom from discerning lips?” I enjoy all the family & church updates, photos and videos. I enjoy the humor and beauty that is shared. But let us as Christians be discerning and wise in how we use our language in all forms so that we do reflect God’s holiness and earn the right to share the “fountain of life” with those with whom we communicate.
