GUARD YOUR HEART!
GUARD YOUR HEART! God’s Word says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). Most of us spend a lot of time and money guarding our possessions. We put locks on our doors and windows and security systems in our homes. We have locks on our car doors and trunks and alarm systems to let us know if someone is breaking in. We pay money to have companies secure our personal and financial information and we pay money for programs to secure our computers and phones. And on it goes. Why? Because thieves of all kinds will break in and steal.
But how much time and thought do we give to guarding our heart? If we do not guard our heart thieves will break into our heart and steal our peace of mind and purity and cause perverseness instead of holiness. Our heart left to its self will lead us down the road to self-centeredness, vanity, and a love of this world instead of a love for God. Our heart is constantly being attacked by a media barrage in this world through TV, radio, videos, CD’s, podcasts, phones, computers, movies, entertainment of all kinds and every other device known to mankind. Instead of allowing all these things to constantly be attacking our heart we need to restrict and monitor what we allow to input into our lives and heart. As we are wise in protecting our worldly possessions we must be wise in protecting something much more valuable—our heart; because as God’s word says, “for everything you do flows from it.”
It is a good idea to start the day with preparing your heart in God’s presence instead of rushing out to do combat with the world without proper preparation. Time spent meditating on God’s Word and talking with Him about your relationship with Him and telling Him your needs for the day, and seeking His help in guarding your heart will change the day from combat to opportunities to serve Him. What goes into the heart will determine what flows out of it. If we restrict the flow of polluted things going in to our heart and enhance the purity of things going in we can see greater results for God flowing out during our daily lives. So at the minimum take as much care to secure your heart as you do to secure your home and auto. The results will be far greater. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
