DILIGENT WORK PAYS OFF! At least in our relationship with God diligent work pays off; not so all the time with human employers or in all relationships. Proverbs 2:1-4 NIV reminds us that God said, “if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,” then certain things of value will happen. Your diligence will pay off. What will those things be? They will be things the world cannot give you.
First on the result list is that “you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God,” (v.5). Serious Christians should desire to deeply know and understand the God they trust in for earthly life and eternity. But after half a century in full-time Christian ministry I must say I believe the percentage of Christians who truly seek after this goal is very low. In spite of all the bibles in multiple versions available, in spite of TV & radio broadcasts, in spite of endless study tools, in spite of worship services on every day of the week, and in spite of all the other resources available I believe the number of Christians who are truly diligent in their pursuit of God’s Word and placing it in their heart and life and obeying it is very low. So most Christians probably miss God’s greatest blessings in this area while God says if we are diligent, “the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” (v.6).
But if we take time to pursue God and His Word diligently God promises that, “He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones,” (v.7-8).The world does not always reward the hard and diligent labors of good people and laborers in their work force. But God always rewards those who direct their labors to digging into His Word and placing those words on the shelves of their heart and mind so they can bring them forth when needed. Success in God’s estimation is different from the world’s value system and God has promised success and protection as we walk in this world and remember who we serve and what His operating manual is. So be diligent in gathering God’s Word into your heart and life because you will be rewarded. It is God’s promise to you. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" (Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
