THE NEVER ENDING FOOD OF CHRISTMAS: Over the years Millie and I have gathered together with people to enjoy the special foods of Christmas. Often this was with the Church family, friends, family members, and sometimes just by ourselves. And when our family came together for Christmas dinner each of the adult ladies had their own special dish they prepared. What a great time together and what delicious food we enjoyed. And isn’t it great the way bakeries and stores turn out special food treats at Christmas time? And who can beat those Church ladies at baking and cooking? People are always looking for good things to eat. And it wasn’t any different in Jesus’ day.
In one event in the life of Jesus people experienced the miracle of being fed by the bread and fish that Jesus multiplied (John 6) so they followed Him expecting more (John 6:26). A lot of people are like that at Christmas time. They enjoy the good things surrounding Jesus at Christmas; the food, the meals, the fellowship, the music, the trees & decorations, even the good spirit that often prevails. People may enjoy the time of year but still miss the real “food” of Christmas. Jesus confronted the expectations of the crowd this way, “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty,” (John 6:35 NIV).
The real food of Christmas and the real meaning of Christmas are wrapped up in Jesus as the “spiritual food” that meets every person’s spiritual needs for all eternity. Though we eat the Christmas foods we will get hungry again but when we experience the real Christmas food to be found in our relationship with the Christ-child of Christmas we will never be spiritually hungry or thirsty again. So eat up both physically and spiritually and enjoy all God has provided this Christmas season in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.
