CHILDREN: Most people consider children a blessing. And undoubtedly most of us consider our babies to be the most beautiful and wonderful babies that have ever been born. Until the grandbabies come and then the contest is on. Really now would you have it any other way? Children are a blessing from God though in our world today many fail to think that way and actually are willing to sacrifice them on the altar of expediency. But God gave all of mankind an exceptional child, the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s own Son. And what a child he turned out to be.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV). Hands down Jesus is the winner in the baby contest. Who could possibly compete with Him? But I am afraid today many parents have sacrificed Jesus on the altar of child worship—not God’s child but their own children. We should all love our children and grandchildren and care for them the best we can but when we place them above our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ and let them replace the time, talent, treasure and worship that is due Jesus then we have not only failed God but we have failed our children as well. As God’s Word says, “We are to raise them in the training and instruction of the Lord,” (Ephesians 6:4 NIV).

As Christmas approaches we need to carefully evaluate the way we approach Christmas with our children, young or adults, and make it a point that we focus on God’s Son and the importance of His birth and life. The bible assigns to Jesus certain names that describe who he is and what he is. As we take the time to reflect on those names God might actually give us some ideas on how we can incorporate those names into our celebration of Christmas with those of all ages. Reflection and meditation appear to be lost on most of society today but I pray that will not be the case with you and me. At least during Christmas season may we pause for a few moments each day to think about what we are really celebrating?
