SIN.WHAT SIN? In our society today there appears to be no standard for what sin actually is. People appear to just pick and choose what they consider right and wrong. The government can pass laws but a lot of people just obey what they like and disregard what they dislike. This attitude more often than not carries over to the realm of how people approach God’s Word and how God defines what sin is. People tend to pick and choose what parts of the bible they agree with and what they don’t. But having said all that the reality is God is the ultimate authority on what sin is and what the results of sinning are. A person may not agree with God’s principles and guidelines for living but their opinion doesn’t change what God has said on the subject of sin and how God will deal with sin.

The Apostle John in discussing the subject of sin had this to say, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us,” (1 John 1:7-10 NIV). In the reading of those verses it is clear that in order to sin there must be a standard God has that we break (“walk in the light, as he is in the light”). The bible is full of verses describing exactly

what God’s standards are. And in addition the bible points out EVERYONE is guilty of sin in at least three ways: (1) we have inherited sin from our relative Adam, i.e., a sin nature (Romans 5:12; Psalm 51:5); (2) we have imputed sin, the sin of Adam that gets placed to our account because he is the “representative” of all us humans (Romans 5:13); and (3) we have personal sin because we trespass, transgress, break God’s laws, do wrong or are rebellious against God just like all those who have lived before us (Deut.9:7; Joshua 1:18). I want to continue this topic tomorrow.
