IS THE BIBLE REALLY GOD’S BOOK? The Apostle Peter in 2 Peter 1:16-19 reminds his readers that what he has spoken to them is not “cleverly devised stories” but rather he is telling them about what he has seen and experienced as an “eyewitness” of the majesty of Jesus in the flesh and real life. He relates the instance on the mount of transfiguration when the glory of God appeared and God the Father spoke and said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” What Jesus did and what God has said is the truth as related by those who walked with Jesus for three and one-half years and experienced life with Him. But how do we know what we are reading is really God’s message from him to us?”

Peter answers that question in this way, “We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit,” (2 Peter 1:19-21 NIV).

Peter’s answer is simple but profound. All of the Scripture (writings of the bible as originally given), Old Testament and New Testament, though written by human beings and recorded by human hands originated from God through the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. These prophets were “borne along” or directed by the Holy Spirit down to the very letters of the Words they wrote though God used the minds and personalities of those involved. These men did not just decide one day to write a letter or book because God clearly states the Scripture “never had its origin in the human will” but these men “spoke from God” as they were directed by the Holy Spirit. Also, the Apostle Paul spoke to this in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” And Jesus put His stamp of approval on the writings of the Old Testament, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished,” (Matthew 5:17-18 NIV).

Yes, we can be sure the Bible is God’s Word and His message to the human race of all ages. When compared to the writings of man there is no comparison. God’s Word shines like a bright light to guide through darkness in every generation while the writings of man barely offer a flicker of light. We live in an age of thousands of choices in the religious realm. Cults and false religions offer all kinds of materials to persuade people to follow their path. Puffed up leaders of these false religions offer their own writings as the path of fulfillment of religious hopes. Truly, there is no end to the writing of books. But God’s Word is sure, proven true through the years and able to change hopelessness to hope and change sinful mankind to followers of the path of righteousness. God has given us His Word. We need to open it, read it, and study it more often.
