TOMORROW!

November 9, 2019

TOMORROW! How often we use those words. They slip out so casually, so easily, often without thinking. Tomorrow I will cut the grass, clean the house, send that text or email, tell someone I love them, or make plans for the future. But in the book of James God reminds us of the lack of certainty concerning tomorrow. “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes,” (James 4:14). At times in Haiti I have sat on the roof of Grace Theological Institute early in the morning and watched the rising sun burn off the mist that spread out across the fields surrounding us. It was there and beautiful at that time of morning and then it was gone. Life is like that. Everything is normal and then it is gone whether through circumstances or death.

Often Christians travel through life without taking thought of what God has planned for them. As James said, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money,” (James 4:13 NIV). Sound familiar? We make plans the way we want life to be. And they may be good plans morally and ethically in purpose. The reality is that we don’t know what tomorrow brings but we should prepare for tomorrow by coming before God and saying, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that,” (James 4:15 NIV). In fact James says, “Submit yourselves then, to God…come near to God and he will come near to you,” (James 4:7-8 NIV).

It is clear that life is uncertain. We see it every day in our society. Car accidents, job injuries and deaths, mass murder incidents, health issues and on it goes. Tomorrow. Life goes on. Maybe. Maybe not. James reminds us that as we plan our lives we need to, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up,” (James 4:10 NIV). The question in life is not, “How long will we live?” The question is, “How will we live?” I have lived long enough to have seen those who have died young and yet made a tremendous impact on society for good. I have also seen those who have lived a long time and lived a life that was very detrimental to society. Tomorrow? Make plans but include God in your plans. In fact seek God’s plan for your life for today, tomorrow and every day after that. And make good use of today because it may be all you have. The good news is that as a Christian God has a wonderful future planned for you and you can read all about it in His book, the bible.
