FAITH: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see,” (Hebrews 11:1 NIV). Bakers Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology gives this basic definition of Faith: Faith is, “Belief, trust, and loyalty to a person or thing.” The writer of Hebrews illustrates more than defines what faith is as you can tell by reading chapter 11. But our belief, trust and loyalty is in God the Father, Jesus the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. And those things; belief, trust and loyalty cause us to have complete confidence in what we hope for. One source defines hope as, “To trust in, wait for, look for, or desire something or someone; or to expect something beneficial in the future.”
As Christians we have a total belief and trust in Jesus Christ and His Word that produces confidence that what we trust Him for and wait for without seeing the actual thing or event produces within us an assurance that cannot be shaken. The writer of Hebrews goes on from this point to illustrate with examples exactly what he means. You need to read Hebrews 11 from beginning to end. It is an exciting chapter of faith people involved in faith events with amazing results. But in Hebrews 11:6 the writer says something that is critical to this entire chapter and our Christian life: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him, (Hebrews 11:6 NIV).
If we try to live our life and operate on the basis of sight we are doomed to an ultimately disappointing life. You will never please God living that way. God is pleased by those who operate on faith. The only way to have a personal relationship with God is to believe that He exists and that He will reward you if you earnestly seek Him. In your relationship with God if you wait until you see Him to try and establish a relationship you will have waited too long because you will be standing before Him in judgment. God is happy with people of faith, people who have belief, trust and loyalty to Him. So happy is God for people of faith that He promises to reward them. And in that you can have faith, hope and confidence.
