HOLD FAST YOUR PROFESSION!
HOLD FAST YOUR PROFESSION! The writer of the book of Hebrews reminds his readers of the past failures of many people professing to be God followers. He also reviews the fact of how God’s word has worked in their hearts and how God knows all about each person and will judge each person. NOW he encourages these people concerning God’s provision for them and us.
In God’s provision for us He has given us “a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God” (Hebrews 4:14 KJV). Because of God’s provision of His Son we should be encouraged to be faithful to God and hold fast the new life we have in Christ. We as humans and sinners need someone to feel as we feel and someone to have experienced the same human emotions, temptations, tests, and limitations, we have felt. In other words someone who totally understands from a human standpoint all the things in life that affect us and cause us to react the ways we do and yet this person needs to have never sinned. Jesus is the only one to meet this qualification and as a great high priest He is able to stand between us and God and act on our behalf because of His sacrificial death on the cross. As the writer says, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points temped like as we are, yet without sin, (Hebrews 4:15 KJV).
Because of God’s great love for us in providing the Word of God to guide us to salvation, and His Son the living word of God to provide the sacrifice that brought salvation, and Jesus’ work on our behalf as a great high priest there is a PROVISION of God we should not ignore. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need,” (Hebrews 4:16). Because we are frail sinful humans we need God’s mercy and we need God’s grace. We need His totally unmerited favor and help that flows from a throne of grace. And we are encouraged to come BOLDLY because God wants us to come with expectation and excitement that He is going to answer His child’s prayer. God wants to meet our needs. God wants to encourage us to stay faithful to Him when so many are so fickle and less than serious about their relationship with God. Let us, because of our loving God and His loving care and concern for us ”hold fast our profession” and honor the King of Kings and Lord of Lords by coming before Him in prayer and trusting Him in times of need.
