EXERCISE!

EXERCISE! Time for the gym? Maybe a run before breakfast? Or maybe a stop to workout after work. Or maybe join a team of some kind to stay fit? Good ideas? May be! The Apostle Paul commented on this in 1 Timothy 4:7b-8 NIV. He said that “physical training is of some value.” After all our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit.  And I must say that most of us want a healthy body. So work to stay healthy. But what about our training in godliness? Paul marks a contrast between physical training and training in godliness. Paul said, “train yourself to be godly. Godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

Physical training often takes blood, sweat and tears. And many spend many hours each week keeping fit. Bravo! But in spite of all that one day the body stops breathing. However, training in godliness produces earthly and eternal results. Doesn’t it make sense for the Christian to spend at least as much time in training to be godly as they do in being physically fit? As in physical training so training in godliness takes different paths with different people. But let me suggest several things that could be involved in almost every Christian’s training in godliness: bible study not just bible reading, serious prayer time, mentor relationships, fellowship with other Christians in and out of church, and service for God. The list of course could be compounded. But shouldn’t we take training in godliness just as serious as physical training?

Now let me stress that training in godliness takes time just like physical training. If you spend more time on physical fitness than you do on spiritual fitness could it be then that you are cheating yourself and God? Just as many people have a program for physical fitness maybe you should map out a program for spiritual fitness. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the evaluation of your training and program. Maybe even talk to your Pastor. And just like physical training will become a natural part of your life so will training in godliness.
