NEW CLOTHES FOR NEW PEOPLE! There should be an obvious difference in a Christian’s past life before coming to know Christ and in life since we have come to know Him. The Apostle Paul says it is a lot like changing clothes; taking off rags and putting on the best of clothing. As Paul says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity,” (Colossians 3:12-14 NIV).
When Jesus comes in, the filth of the world goes out and the filth is replaced with the very best of life. Old clothes are put off and new clothes are put on and it’s all at the expense of Jesus. This is not something the Christian can do by just acting better. No, Jesus must do it by living in us and through us and totally renewing our mind and heart. The Holy Spirit must empower us in mind and heart to live as spiritually changed human beings whose actions and looks and behavior reflect the glory of our Savior Jesus Christ and not the filth of the world. One of the problems of Christianity today is that many try to dumb down to look like the world. But God wants us to change from the old clothes of the world to the new clothes of Christ so that we can help the world to eventually wear the new clothes of Christ. Enjoy your new clothes.
