THE PAST. Every Christian has a past, a time when they did not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In that past life many thoughts and actions were not pleasing to God, they were in fact sinful. This is true at whatever time in life a person comes to know Christ. The Bible says that “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” That’s why every person needs forgiveness of sins and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. As a Christian our new life in Christ should reflect new thoughts and actions. The Apostle Paul said, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all,” (Colossians 3:5-11 NIV). Whatever our life before salvation in Christ our life should be changed and changing now. Our old sinful ways and thoughts should be gotten rid of and we should know that is happening and so should the people around us. This should be true of every Christian on earth no matter where they reside. The only way the Christian can accomplish this is through the power that resides in us through Jesus Christ who “is all and in all”. We cannot accomplish this dramatic change in our life by our self. Only God’s Holy Spirit living in us can bring about this transformation and He will only do that as we yield our lives to His willing work in our lives.
