CONTENTMENT!

CONTENTMENT!  Most seek it but few find it. Why is this? I think often it is because we want to live life on our terms but soon we discover that is not always possible. We find that people, circumstances, health, weather, finances, world events, accidents, and death interfere in our plans. Things are just not always under our control. And discontentment often sets in because we think life is unfair and things are not the way they should be. But yet God says it is possible to live a very contented life in spite of all these factors and even when life spirals out of control. We may desire to travel but God says, "No". We may wish to be physically fit but we find our health is broken. We want to help others but instead find we need help. And we could go on with multiple situations. Almost as many situations as there are people. I am sure you might be able to list your own.

Even the Apostle Paul faced this challenge of contentment in all his trials, and there were many, he found the answer that allowed him to have contentment even in the worse of circumstances. The answer was not in any kind of human self-help course or ten step program from some popular speaker or spiritual adviser. The answer certainly was not in the advice of friends like the biblical Job had. The Apostle Paul said the answer to contentment in life is found in just one place, "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength," (Philippians 4:11-13 NIV).

 

Jesus is the answer. We must rely on His strength not our own. We are weak. He is strong. We often have no control over our circumstances. Jesus has control over all things. We may have no resources. Jesus owns everything in the universe. We often are confused about God's will especially in times of tragedy or death. Jesus knows His will for our life and every life perfectly. We do not know what a day may bring but Jesus knows all things. As the song writer wrote, "Trust and obey for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey." As God's Word says, "In Jesus we live and move and have our being" and "we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength." Is it time to stop questioning and doubting and searching and start relying on the one who can give real contentment?
