REFLECTION AND HURRICANES! Reflection is good to a certain extent if we don't become too self-absorbed. I think today's bible passage does cause us to reflect on things especially if a hurricane has ever visited you. I am reminded when preparing for hurricanes that I am not as young as I used to be. Preparation takes longer and is more tiring and recovery takes longer. BUT inwardly (spiritually) renewal is brought even more to the forefront of our attention. That has a tendency to happen when the media continually tells you that if you don't do what they say you will die. So we want to make sure we are prepared to meet God. Another good thing about hurricanes and this bible passage is that reflection helps us to get our priorities in order. When all earthly possessions can disappear in a gust of wind or in a rush of water (and we can also) then it helps to remind us of what really is important and eternal. And it is not stuff. "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal," (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NIV). Keep looking up while dealing with circumstances and troubles. Keep focused on what is eternal not what is temporary. Keep building inward while repairing the outward.
