SURPRISE! There they were thinking they were madly in love and ready to get married. As part of the premarital counseling the following Bible passage was read. And then something happened that had never happened in one of these counseling sessions with me before or since. Here is that Bible passage, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a NIV).
At the end of the reading the young lady stood up and said, "He doesn't love me like that." She quickly left the office. End of relationship. End of planned wedding. SURPRISE! One smart young lady probably was saved from a life of regrets. Everyone it seems is looking for love and in this world today REAL love is hard to find. But we do have measuring sticks found in the Bible and we should use them to help us identify REAL love when it appears. Of course we are reminded in another great verse how much God loves us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (Gospel of John 3:16 NIV). Have you experienced this great love that God offers you?
