EXPECT OPPOSITION! God reveals in Acts 16 that the Apostle Paul & Silas ventured into an area where the gospel had not yet penetrated. Their preaching and miracles resulted in people being saved and people being angered. That anger resulted in Paul & Silas being thrown in jail. The gospel always meets opposition. We should expect it because Satan is always at work. But opposition also brings opportunities. And opposition also reveals Christian character and determination. As Paul and Silas sat in jail, in chains and in the stocks, God brought a great earthquake and a great opportunity. They had a great opportunity to escape jail but instead they remained in place. The jailer who thought they had escaped and who was about to kill himself was astonished. And then a great opportunity presented itself with the jailer. "He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved? They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved —you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house," (Acts 16:30-31 NIV). End result: the jailer, the people of his household, and many others got saved. The leaders of the community who wrongfully jailed them came and apologized and released them. A new avenue was opened up for the spreading of the gospel. Sharing the gospel will always meet opposition. Keep on even though you may not understand why God allows adverse circumstances. Authorities and the crowds may oppose you. But God is working out His plan to get the attention of those who need the gospel. And in the end some will be saved. And in the end God will be glorified.
