SO YOU THINK YOU ARE SPECIAL? It is possible for individuals to feel that they are some special favorite person before God as compared to other people. Or to the other extreme they may feel that God loves others more than them. But the apostle Peter puts this into perspective for us. "Then Peter began to speak: ‘I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,’"(Acts 10:34-36 NIV). The ground is level at the foot of the cross. Everyone in every nation is sinful before God “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 NIV) but forgiveness and salvation is open to all. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Romans 10:13 NIV). Jesus said regarding our responsibilities given to us by God, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked,” (Luke 12:48 NIV). Favoritism is out and responsibility is in. To whom much is given much is required. As we reflect on our own individual lives and our nation, how do we respond to our brothers and sisters in Christ in other nations? A person cannot choose the family or nation into which they are born. How do we who have more worldly God-given "privileges" and "resources" respond to the needs of the lost people of all nations? The answer is not to feel guilty for our failures of the past but rather to move forward in responsible action. Is our heart in tune with God's heart?
