IT IS LARGE! It is estimated that the Service Industry in the U.S. accounts for more than 80 per cent of the private-sector employment or more than 90 million jobs. Service is big business when it comes to making money; however it doesn’t seem that most people are too interested in serving others if no money is involved. When you think about it Christians should be in the service business as well if we are to truly model Jesus. Jesus spoke to His disciples about serving others as part of true discipleship. He said, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many,” (Gospel of Matthew 20:26-28 NIV).

Pastors would be thrilled if 80 per cent of their congregational members were truly serving Jesus and the body of Christ in serving others. I think most Pastors would be happy with an even lower percentage because it would be a big improvement over what it is now. People serve happily when money is involved it seems but fewer find joy in serving when no reward is in view. A basic question arrives in discipleship and in service to others, “Will I be like Jesus and serve others joyfully without thought of reward or will I only serve if there is some type of reward in view?” Jesus gave us a great principle to consider, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money," (Matthew 6:24 NIV). Selfless service for God seeks no reward for self. Who or what are you going to serve today?
