FEAR OVERCOME! Fear can do many things to a person. It can freeze you into place so that you are afraid to move or fear can motivate you to do heroic or seemingly impossible things. Fear can reveal character or it can destroy character. When Jesus was taken to the cross His disciples headed for a hiding place. After Jesus rose from the grave He found His group of scared Apostles hiding out in a room with the doors locked. They were fearful people, confused and defeated. What Jesus said to them brought relief and utter amazement to them in body, soul and spirit. The Apostles were fearful, probably more than they had ever been in their lives. These men who had experienced feats in their life that few had ever seen in human history as they walked with a miracle working God were now hiding in a room behind closed doors.
The Apostles were scared but Jesus still loved them and considered them as servants useful for His Kingdom work. They were hiding now but would soon be sent as bold servants of God into a sinful world that needed to hear about the resurrected Jesus. I look at these men and then I look at myself and the Christians I know and I am amazed God would choose any of us and send us to be His servants and messengers to this sinful world. Praise belongs to God who turns our fear into peace and our mission in life into representing Him in the world. When Jesus appeared to these fearful men He said to them, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you,” (Gospel of John 20:21 NIV). The resurrected Jesus turns fear into peace and weakness into strength and lost direction into a mission in life. When fear is overcome through having peace given by God life takes on new meaning and purpose. The Apostle Paul reminded the young preacher Timothy, “For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind,” (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV). Let us remember that God has done the same for us as well and let us carry out our mission for God in the same God enabled power.
