INTEGRITY! It is hard to find someone with integrity today. Integrity is “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.” It used to be that a “man’s word” was his bond but today it is more like “buyer beware.” A lot of people talk about honesty and having strong moral principles but we all know that talk is cheap. “The proof really is in the pudding” as the old proverb goes. One picture of integrity is given to us by Jesus when He said, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets,” (Matthew 7:12 NI V). This “golden rule” is something all of us should incorporate into our life. C.S. Lewis defined integrity in this manner, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” Of course God is always watching and I am sure He is pleased when we act with integrity.
In the years of my Pastoral and Missions Ministry I have watched many men in Pastoral and Missionary Ministry go down in flames like an airplane hit by a missile because of a failure in their integrity. The Apostle Paul in writing to the young Preacher Titus said, “In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us,” (Titus 2:7-8 NIV). God is looking for men and women of integrity so that they may honor Him and be an example to the world of how all people should live. The Apostle Paul said that we should live, “so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders,” because through the life of integrity of Christians people can see Jesus and come to know Him.
