HOLINESS! Have you noticed that people don’t talk much about it anymore? Even Christians! As I listen to the words many Christians use today I find it hard to separate the language of the world from the language of the Church. In fact some of the words coming from the pulpits seem strangely out of place. I will also mention there are problems concerning clothing, beverages, activities, hobbies and sexual preferences in relation to holiness and the Christian today. Many other things could be noted. By now some reading this post will have me labeled as some kind of weirdo out of touch conservative white male who is sour on life and wants to criticize other people. At least in part they would be wrong. I am a person who attempts to live a life of holiness while enjoying life and sharing my life with all kinds of people, Christians and non-Christians. It is to my shame that I fail often. After all God said in His Word, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written, ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16 NIV).  It seems many Christians have forgotten this today or maybe a lot of Christians are just ignoring what God desires of them.

Many people may have a hard time figuring out exactly what Holiness is but in simple terms we could just follow what God said about 3500 years ago since God is the same yesterday, today and forever. God said in His Word, “What does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,” (Deuteronomy 10:12 NIV). Some in our day have tried to make life simple in this area by applying a simple test to all things by simply asking, “What would Jesus do?”  If our inward thoughts and our outward actions matched up with Jesus we would be in good shape. It is true that what is in the heart produces our actions (Matthew 12:34-35). I think a little more Jesus and a little less self would make a big difference in our world. At least we can make that happen in our personal life.
