HOPE! Sometimes that is all we have in life because circumstances dictate to us that things are absolutely hopeless. It is well at that time that we know what and who our hope is in. It is good to “have God’s hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure,” (Hebrews 6:19 NIV). When things look hopeless it is time once again to realize that blessings can only be found in one place, “Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—the Lord who remains faithful forever, (Psalm 146:5-6 NIV). It is easy when things look hopeless to lose heart and to be discouraged especially if you are facing the circumstances alone or standing with people who are hopelessly discouraged. But it is exactly at that time that we need to remember the words of the Book, “But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him, on those whose hope is in His unfailing love,” (Psalm33:18 NIV). Even in the worse of circumstances there is One who sees the situation, One who loves us, and One who has the power to help and see us through the darkness that may surround us. Often we do not see answers to the dilemma that may be attempting to cause us to be hopeless and so we ask the question of the Psalmist, “But now, Lord, what do I look for?” (Psalm 39:7 NIV). May our answer be as his, “My hope is in you.”

HOPE! It is good to remind ourselves that we have an entire Book, the Bible, that has been written to give us hope. The Apostle Paul said, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope,” (Romans 15:4 NIV). We need to take time to examine the lives and adventures of the men and women who walk across the pages of the Bible and see the problems and situations they faced in life. We need to see how the same loving God we have today took care of them and provided answers for their lives. This should also give us hope that God will do the same for us. The answers we look for in hope may not come quickly or in the manner we expect so let us remember, “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not have, we wait for it patiently,” (Romans 8:24-25 NIV). Hope and patience go hand in hand. They walk through life together. God is good and He will fulfill our hope in Him in His time and in His way.
