REST! Sometimes it seems you just can’t get enough of it and sometimes it seems you are forced to take more than you want. Energetic babies never seem to want to rest while young mothers always seem to need more rest. Adults often find themselves restless and needing rest for a variety of reasons. A weary traveler is often looking for a rest area and sometimes it seems they will never appear. Rest is truly a four-letter word that has many sides and meanings to it both physical and spiritual. On the spiritual side it is true of every one of us that our SOUL will find no true rest until we meet God and He gives us the rest that our soul is truly seeking. Every human being is seeking rest for their soul whether they realize it or not. Because the world encompasses us with all its trappings from the time we are born many people will never realize why they seem to find no rest for their spiritual nature. If one is born in a non-Christian home they may not discover God’s cure for their restless soul for many years or maybe never. Rest for the body is important but of even more importance is rest for our soul. One is temporary the other is eternal.

Three thousand years ago King David of Israel expressed in Psalm 62 how in a tumultuous world where he was assaulted on every side he could still find rest in God. “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken,” (Psalm 62:1 NIV). We live today in a restless society where things seem unstable and it often appears that Christians are under attack from every side just as David was in his day. Often we may feel like David who described himself as under assault and in appearance as “a leaning wall” and “a tottering fence” (v.3) and many of us may feel that we fit that description as we attempt to make our way through life. David, though in the midst of troubles on every side said, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him,” (v.5) and “Power belongs to you, God, and with you Lord, is unfailing love,” (v.11, 12). Physical rest may be hard to come by sometimes and restlessness may attack us but this one thing is true: as God’s children we can know God loves us with an unfailing love and we can find rest for our souls even in the midst of troubles that surround us on every side. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28-30 NIV).
