DEATH HURTS! Tears flow. Even when one understands the great truths of the Bible when one you love dies death hurts and tears flow. We are in good company. When His friend Lazarus died the Bible says, "Jesus wept," (Gospel of John 11:35 NIV). In His humanity Jesus joined in grieving over a loved one. BUT Jesus also knew death was not the end of things. Jesus said to Martha, the sister of Lazarus, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (Gospel of John 11:25-26 NIV). And then, having wept for Lazarus, Jesus resurrected Him! What an amazing demonstration of God’s heart, God’s promises and God’s power we have in this event.
It is OK to weep for the dead, even the Christian dead, when they die. But if they are Christians let us concentrate on the blessings they are enjoying as they have gone into the presence of Jesus even though we will miss them. Let us weep more often for those who are living and who will leave this world without the promise of eternity in Christ's loving presence. May this realization move us to pray more for them and share the good news of the gospel with them. When people die without having accepted Jesus as their Savior it is too late to change their destiny but while they are alive may God help us to share Jesus with them so they may have the experience of eternal life in Jesus.
