HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THIS LATELY? "Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age,” (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV). This command was not only intended for those in Jesus’ presence at the time but the command was also meant for His disciples of every age. Have you thought about this command lately? I would hope at some point in time in every Christian’s walk with Christ this command would come to be second nature and in our DNA. Jesus did not give a suggestion but rather He gave a command for each of us as Christians to go into the world, the environment where we live, so that people in every nation could become followers of Jesus Christ.
If a recent Gallup Poll is correct then it appears that most Christians, Pastors and Churches in America don’t seem to get too excited about this command by Jesus. The poll revealed that church membership dropped by 18 percentage points over the last twenty years. Membership fell from 70 percent of the US population claiming church membership to 52 percent today. Gallup says, “The decline in church membership is consistent with larger societal trends in declining church attendance and an increasing proportion of Americans with no religious preference.” It appears the church is not doing its job of making disciples, baptizing them and teaching them God’s Word. It is easy for us as Christians to make excuses for not sharing the gospel message with those in “our nation or world.” It is easy not to be a part of “going and making” and leaving that to the “professionals.” But if Jesus were standing before us in bodily form and gave the same command how would we react? Have you thought about that? When we as Christians open His book and read those words is not the Holy Spirit of God speaking to us as though Jesus was right there before us? It is time for all Christians to take God’s Great Commission seriously and begin to carry it out in our own life, in our own neighborhood, and in our own country. If even the majority of the Christian community in America would be obedient to Jesus' command I believe we would see the greatest revival the world has ever known. But even each one of us through our obedience to Jesus can make a difference. Have you thought about it lately?
