WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE TRIED THIS AS A SOCIETY? “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate, and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing, (1 Peter 3:8-9 NIV). Can you imagine what would happen if members of Congress acted that way toward one another? Or if that conduct was exhibited during political debates? Or if business matters were handled that way on a daily basis? Since Peter was writing these verses to Christians can you imagine what it would be like if Christians treated each other this way or even if our Christian families practiced these principles? Most non-Christians are powerless to live like Peter directed but certainly Christians who are indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit should do their very best to live in this manner.
Jesus gave this command to His followers, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another,” (John 13:34-35 NIV). The Apostle Peter it seems to me in the verses quoted above gives a very real application of what Jesus said in His love command. If Christians would practice these principles would not the world see the love of Christ in us and then also be challenged to act in the same manner. We do not sacrifice the truth of God’s Word in any area by attempting to live out the truth of God’s Word in all the arenas of life. Sometimes in the light of other peoples’ behavior it is tough to do what the bible teaches. It is well to remember what the Apostle Paul told Timothy, “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline,” (2 Timothy 1:7 NIV). Society as a whole will probably never live as Peter directed until Jesus sets up His Kingdom but in the meantime Christians should try to operate on these principles.
