OLD WORDS MEET REAL NEEDS TODAY!

June 27, 2019

OLD WORDS MEET REAL NEEDS TODAY!  We live in an era of unprecedented communication systems and new ones seem to arrive almost every day. Never have so many wanted to say so much that amounts to so little. It is a wonder to me that our eyes and ears function so well for so long as they are bombarded by so much on a regular basis. And one would think that while all that is conveyed in so short a time for such a long period of time that our brains would simply burn out from overload. And I think for some it has happened. How so many supposed bright and intelligent people can be on the airwaves twenty-four hours a day professing to fill us with knowledge can be so ignorant themselves of real facts is beyond me. Entertainment fills the airwaves in every form twenty-four hours a day but so little is really entertainment that is worthwhile. Religious programs abound twenty-four hours a day by every communication process available to mankind. Some of the programming is really good and promotes authentic Christianity and some of the programming promotes false religions and cults and some is syncretistic merging the real with the false.

I believe old words from the Bible that came through spokesmen sent by God meet real needs today. It is good to hear real truth, God’s truth, from a real man who lived and walked among real people who had some real problems in life. The nation of Israel had so many problems that God was really mad at them. Micah was a prophet of the nation of Israel and lived and prophesied in the years surrounding 722BC. At this time Israel was marked by unfaithful and corrupt leadership and mistreatment of the poor, women, children, and anyone else without status or stature in life. And the religious life of the nation was in the pits as well. The sum total of all this was that God’s judgment was going to fall on the nation and soon. And it did. Multitudes of voices and misconceptions about God can often drown out the voice of God.

But Micah delivered one message to the nation that should have cut them to the quick and should get our attention also. With God’s power Micah delivered this message to a wayward nation, “He has shown you O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God,” (Micah 6:8 NIV). Just prior to these words Micah had told them that religious history, religious offerings and prior blessings received from God was not enough to overcome their sinful actions toward their fellow man and toward God. America needs to listen to the message of Micah today. What God wanted then and wants now is people who have been made new on the inside and who demonstrate it on the outside by their actions. Jesus said to Nicodemus about 750 years after Micah’s day, “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again,” (John 3:7 NIV). This is the same Jesus who said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven,” (Matthew 5:16 NIV).  What was true in Micah’s day and Jesus’ day is still true today. New birth brings new life with new actions. Listening to old words without all the communication confusion of today can meet real needs.
