SHOW YOURSELF A MAN! When you hear those words what flashes to your mind? Maybe men think one thing and women another. What would a “real man’s man” mean when he says those words? Let’s ask King David, a real man’s man, who had all the problems in life that anyone would ever want to endure and yet he was a man after God’s own heart. From a shepherd boy to a giant killer, to a leader of the King’s army and finally he became the King himself. David was a great and mighty shepherd, a leader of men, a warrior, a musician, and a man with all the passions that men have. So as David comes to the end of his life it is interesting what he tells his son about being a man. He doesn’t give him a lecture on marriage, finances, the skills of fighting, or the necessity to look handsome, tough or brawny. Here is what David told his son about what is extremely important for a real man. “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” David said. “So be strong, SHOW YOURSELF A MAN, and observe what the Lord your God requires. Walk in all his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go,” (1 Kings 2:2-3 NIV).
Real men love God, follow God and are obedient to the truths and principles of the Word of God. Sons and daughters will never be all that God intends them to be without following David’s advice. They may be well educated, excellent athletes, sportsmen, hunters, talented musicians, scientists, or a million other exceptional things but if they are not following David’s advice they will never be all that God wants them to be. Real men should be men that follow David’s advice and they should be teachers of their children to do likewise. Real men may not be tall, dark and handsome. Real men may not be athletes, sportsmen, hunters or soldiers. Real men may not be exceptionally talented in any area. But real men in God’s eyes are followers of David’s advice because God recognized David as a man after His own heart. In the book of Acts it is recorded, “After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do,” (Acts 13:22 NIV). It is time for men to “man up” and show themselves to be real men and follow God and teach their family to love and follow God.
