HI HO! HI HO! IT IS OFF TO WORK WE GO!

June 17, 2019

HI HO! HI HO! IT IS OFF TO WORK WE GO! Yes it is Monday and for most of those still in their working years in pre-retirement it is time to start another work week. Yes I know that in America today large percentages of people work on weekends as well so their workweek is different. Workweek may be an outdated term as “a week” for many people is often just days or even hours. And “work” is certainly a relative term. What a person gets paid for is sometimes more fun than work. Sometimes work does not seem like work because a person enjoys it so much. But for most people work is there just to provide the funds for the expenses of life and maybe some pleasures as well. It is great when work can provide the necessities of life and bring enjoyment and help to others as well. Some people in life eschew work at all costs. They just don’t want to work and they want others to provide for all their necessities in life. Often these people “work” the government or social welfare systems to their advantage so they don’t have to work and others just plain out rob society by their illegal actions. Many of these people are leeches on the working people of this world. Those in society who cannot work because of physical, mental or other debilitating problems actually suffer because of the actions of these leeches or people of illegal actions. I am sure God is not happy with their actions and I am sure God is happy when society takes care of those in real need.

The bible is full of verses on a proper work ethic and the results thereof. The Apostle Paul said, “Even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: ‘If a man will not work, he shall not eat,’” (2 Thessalonians 3:10 NIV). The normal expected pattern of life is that all should work to be self-sufficient. Again Paul said, “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody,” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12NIV). We live in a society today that needs to be a lot quieter, have fewer busybodies, and be more self-sufficient. There are certainly people in our society who need and deserve assistance for their well-being and God would encourage us to help them. The Psalmist said it well, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands,” (Psalm 90:17 NIV). It is still true today that, “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth,” (Proverbs 10:4 NIV). May God help all of us to be productive people in life.
