NEUROLOGISTS! I visit the neurologist on a regular basis since my wife had a stroke four years ago; for her continued health and well-being we visit her doctor together. They tell me a neurologist “treats disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.” I would think there would be a lot of politicians today who really need to see a neurologist because I am sure their brain has been affected by some kind of disorder. I would think most people never see a neurologist unless something drastic happens in their life. Now I can tell you from personal experience over the course of four years that there are vast differences in neurologists and we are thankful for the neurologist my wife has now. After seeing neurologists in their offices, in hospitals, and in rehab centers it is obvious they all have the same set of basic questions like: “what day of the week is it?, what is the date today?, what season of the year is it?, when were you born?, what city do you live in?, where are you right now?, what is your name?, what is the name of the nearest hospital?, can you count down from ten to one?, if you take seven from one hundred what is the balance?” Some of those are trick questions. I will let you figure out which ones they are.
Neurologists are important and our current neurologist is a very likeable person and I think very interested in helping his patients. He has some very interesting charts on his office walls detailing different medical problems that affect different parts of the body. We spend some of our time while waiting in the office observing these things and discussing them. These visits have served to cause me to reflect on the many disabilities that people may encounter in life and to have a greater empathy for them regardless of how those disabilities have come about. Life on planet earth can be harsh and unforgiving at times and sometimes people get down on God not really understanding that God is not the cause of sin and disease. For that we must thank the original parents of the human race and their sinful act against God. Even Christians need physicians today to help them with medical problems and disorders that can be quite severe and long-lasting. There is coming a time and a place though when all that will change for us as the book of Revelation describes, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away,” (Revelation 21:3-4 NIV). For the Christian the medical problems of this life will one day have a permanent cure though the medical problems of this earthly life may be with us until our promotion to heaven. God is good and the Great Physician will be true to His Word.
