IS TRUTH REALLY IMPORTANT? Truth is often defined as “the quality or state of being true” or some would say “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.” Some would say it is simply “a fact or belief that is accepted as true.” With that last definition you can actually do away with truth. Just because someone has a belief something is true doesn’t necessarily make it true. Just watch the “fake news” media today and you will see what I mean. Truth really is important because acceptance of truth will determine where you spend eternity and how you live your life today. It appears that a majority of society has no regard for truth today. Just think about the terms we often use. We “stretch” the truth. We “bend” the truth. We tell the “honest” truth. Is there a “dishonest” truth? Evidently, for many there is. What happens when truth is disregarded and truth becomes whatever is “true” to you without regard to others? At that time is there really a standard or truths that all of us in society can live by?

As Christians we should have no doubt about what truth really is for God Himself has revealed it to us in several ways. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me,” (John 14:6 NIV). Jesus IS truth and the only way to the heavenly father is through Jesus. Any other way offered, promoted, or said to be the way to the father is not truth; it is a lie or deception offered up by sinful human beings or those deceived by Satan. Any person who says they are a Christian and offers a different way of salvation for anyone is deceived and in opposition of the truth stated by God and in fact is being used as a tool of Satan the great opposer of truth. Another way God has revealed His truth to us is through His Word. “All Scripture (the bible) is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work,” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV). We could multiply verses showing the bible is God’s book of revealed truth to guide us in this world. Jesus asked the Father to “sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth,” (John 17:17 ESV). So the process of knowing and living truth in this world begins with a relationship with Jesus and then living our lives based on the truths revealed in the Word of God. This will help us to separate truth from non-truth whether it is in the media of all kinds, personal relationships, spiritual relationships, governmental policies, or any other areas of life. Living the truth will undoubtedly lead us into conflict situations in this world. When that happens we still need to handle those conflicts in accordance with God’s truth and that may mean persecution and taking a stand for what is right. Christians need to know the truths of God’s Word because ignorance of the Word will lead people who profess to be Christians down many wrong roads in this world. This will cause the one with a lack of knowledge of God’s Word unnecessary problems that compromise their ability to live in the real truth found in Jesus. Let us do as the Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth,” ( 2 Timothy 2:15 ESV).
