IS IT SUMMER? Since Memorial Day is past everyone moves into summer mode and considers it summer time. It is true that summer officially begins on June 21 but what are a few calendar days between friends? The weather in most places in the U.S. is warmer and more pleasant and in some places it is downright hot. The swimming pools are open or close to it, picnics are happening, vacations are lined up and outdoor activities are in full swing. For those of us who live in the sunny South our A/C’s are tuned up and it is time to think about hurricane season. In some places the folks are still trying to clean up after storms and tornados and our hearts and prayers go out to them. All of us should realize we could be next on the hit list of disasters. Though people move from one section of a country to another section disaster can stalk us in any place and summer is not an option. God Word says, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease,” (Genesis 8:22 NIV). So summer is here and we just need to make the best of it. Enjoy it, prepare for it and use it for God’s glory.
In the book of Jeremiah the prophet in the Bible Jeremiah laments over the failure of His people Israel to consider the periods of time in their lives. Jeremiah says, “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved.” (Jeremiah 8:20 NIV). In other words Jeremiah is saying that the time of fruit gathering was past and yet they remained unsaved, undelivered by the hand of God from the siege of Jerusalem by their enemy. And why was this so? The nation was unrepentant in their sins against God and would not turn to Him. So the months went by and the nation remained unrepentant and unsaved. This condition did not need to remain. Jeremiah said, “Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?” (Jeremiah 8:22 NIV). The Great Physician God was there but they refused to turn to Him and because of that they would remain unsaved. This summer people will run in all directions and be involved in all kinds of activities and yet many will not really consider this period of time in their lives. This summer may be the last summer we spend on earth and yet many people have not considered this period of time in their lives. People are besieged on every side by sin and yet have not dealt with the sin problem in their lives and their lack of a relationship with God Himself through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. I am praying that everyone who reads this post WILL NOT end the summer and find themselves unsaved but rather in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Romans 10:13 NIV).
