LIFE IS FULL OF IT!

May 31, 2019

LIFE IS FULL OF IT! That means different things to different people and often that depends on your age group and your extended family. Sudden deaths, disasters, health issues, job losses or changes, graduations, marriages, births, accidents, war and on the list goes. Does anyone have a serene and peaceful life anymore or did we ever really have one? It seems life marches on at a rapid pace today. Even vacations can sometimes be full of activity and people return home more exhausted than when they left. Even retirement communities here in Florida where I live offer so many activities for the retired it makes one suspicious that they are attempting to kill off the current population so they can replace them with younger retirees. It makes me happy I am still working instead of trying to keep up with the retirees. My mailbox is stuffed each day with businesses offering me opportunities to fill my life with things that will make it better and more full (translation – busy). I don’t receive many offers that really let me just relax and have time to think. Maybe thinking has gone out of vogue today. That appears to be especially true of politicians. Yes, life is full of it. But is the fullness really good, bad, or indifferent?

Life will always be full of something. I wonder how often people really take time for reflection; time just to think and review their life and look out into the future? How often do Christians really take time to reflect on the Word of God and discover what it really says and what it really means and how it should apply to their life? The Christian realm is really filled with daily devotionals today, like this one, where we can spend five minutes and a prayer and think we have reflected on the Word of God and now we are ready to face the world for another day. I receive three or more of these devotionals on my cell phone every morning and I appreciate them but they can’t replace the time I spend in God’s Word or my time of reflection on life. My time, like your time, will be filled with something. But in the middle of this activity and fullness let us take time to really reflect on God’s Word, our life, our future and also on what God wants us to do today. Yes, life is full of it and sometimes things demand some of our time, but my prayer is that God will help us to discern what we should fill our life with and what will bear fruit for eternity. As the Apostle said, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is,” (Ephesians 5:15-17 NIV).
