FREEDOM! “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death! (Patrick Henry). These words by one of America’s greatest patriots I think would be echoed by all those whom we honor this Memorial Day weekend. Each one honored today served their country and it cost them their life. The line of honor stretches back into centuries past but each person in that line deserves our respect for service rendered and a life given that others might enjoy freedom and the riches of America. Too often people are remiss to remember what the freedoms they enjoy today have cost those who went before them. It is too easy to live life in American today and take things for granted that others have bought and paid for with their life. Those among us, who want to rewrite history, destroy statutes, deface property, and hide portraits of those who have gone before and have often given their lives for our freedom, do not understand the lessons of history and the growth in values that God has brought about. Many of those who died serving in the military may have had different views and values of many of us but they loved America and sacrificed their lives for it so that we enjoy America today. On this day we honor them all for their sacrifice for our nation.

Freedom is something it seems that everyone seeks. No one really wants to live in bondage or be a slave to others or be a slave to things detrimental to their well-being. America today is overwhelmed at the borders by people from all over the world who want to live In America. They are seeking freedom and a piece of the American dream. Even if all these people gained entrance to America they would still be missing real freedom; that is the freedom found in Jesus Christ. The bible tells us, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed,” (John 8:36 NIV). Our American patriots who gave their lives for the cause of freedom could only help assure us that we had opportunities to enjoy those freedoms including the freedom of religion. But the freedom that Jesus wants to give us is freedom from sin and death and freedom to enjoy abundant life here and now and for eternity. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” (John 10:10 NIV). This Memorial Day weekend we honor those who died that we might enjoy freedom. Let us also honor the opportunity they have given us to enjoy freedom of religion by choosing the freedom that is offered in Jesus Christ.
