MEMORIAL DAY! “Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, will be on May 27 this year.” We in the United States, and in many countries of the world, need to remember and honor these true heroes who have given their all that we might enjoy the benefits we relish today. It is disgusting today to see how little value some people place on the sacrifice these men and women have made on our behalf. While living in the comfort that has come from the sacrifice of thousands of people dying in this country, as well as in countries around the world, to contain the forces of evil, some people continue to trash our fallen heroes through their words and actions that denigrate the lives that have been given. Some of these people who are the harshest critics of this country come from countries that have been liberated by these fallen heroes. Let all of us who love America remember and honor on this holiday weekend those who have given their lives that we might live and enjoy the freedoms of the greatest country in the world. Let those who would criticize and denigrate the sacrifice of our fallen heroes keep their mouths shut and seek another place in the world that would give them more freedoms and greater opportunities.
While remembering the deceased military members who died while on duty serving and protecting our country from its enemies and providing a place of freedom and safety in which Americans could live it is also a good time to remember the one who sacrificed His life that all of us could live in spiritual freedom and experience eternal life. Our fellow Americans laid down their lives that we might enjoy life in America. Jesus Christ laid down His life that “we may have life, and have it to the full, (John 10:10 NIV). As Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep,” (John 10:11 NIV). Because of our fallen military heroes we enjoy life in America and it is a great place to live. Jesus came and died to give us something even better; He came to give us eternal life. Our American heroes loved their country. Jesus loves us and was willing to die for us also. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” (John 15:13 NIV). As we observe Memorial Day and remember those who died for us so we could live in freedom let us also remember Jesus and His sacrifice so we could live in spiritual freedom and also one day live in a country far greater than even America.
