JESUS CHRIST IS THE SAME YESTERDAY AND TODAY AND FOREVER. These words jump off the pages of God’s Word from their address in Hebrews 13:8. In the midst of encouraging words like “keep on,” “do not forget,” “do,” ”continue,” “be content,” we find the words that help us in living out these encouragements. “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever” and He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). If the Saints of old could love each other, show hospitality to strangers, pray for those in prison, have honorable marriages, be sexually pure , not be governed by a life of greed but rather be content with what they had, then so can we today. How can we achieve this? We can do it through depending on the same Jesus they depended on and who is the same today as He was then with all the resources anyone ever needs to live a righteous and holy life before God. As the writer of Hebrews said, “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’”
We live in a rapidly changing world. Everything around us is changing on a regular basis. We learn one thing or one way of doing something and then in an instant it is obsolete and changed. A person may spend years and thousands of dollars on gaining an education and within an instant all the years of education in a particular area and all the thousands of dollars spent evaporate with a new discovery, patent, or disaster. An accident or sudden critical health problem or health situation may change life forever. The death of a spouse, family member or employer may change the remainder of your life. In all of these things the Christian should remember, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” As God has been sufficient for all the Saints who have gone before us Jesus is sufficient for today. As Jesus has met the needs and walked with the Saints through all generations so He walks with us with all the characteristics, power and glory that He demonstrated and used for the Saints of those days. The world and our circumstances in life are changing in what sometimes seems like the “speed of light.” Let us remember to call upon and depend on Jesus Christ who is the same loving God today that He has always been and no matter our life now and in the future Jesus will be with us providing for us, encouraging us, and guiding us into future and glorious life with Him for eternity.
