HOW MUCH IS A GOOD MOM WORTH?

May 10, 2019

HOW MUCH IS A GOOD MOM WORTH? Maybe you think your Mother is the best Mom that ever existed or maybe you are a person who was abused by your Mother. Or maybe you are somewhere in between. The writer of the book of Proverbs had an interesting question for us to consider. He asked, “A wife of noble character who can find?” His answer should give us pause to think as he said, “She is worth far more than rubies.” Both of those quotes are from Proverbs 31:10 NIV. The writer goes on to describe the actions and lifestyle of this valuable wife and mother. I think by the time most women have read the verses that follow verse 10 they are exhausted just thinking about all the activity described and attributed to this wife and mom and may be discouraged by their reading. After all what is described is SUPER WIFE AND MOM!  If we remember the context of the passage it will help us because most of the actual actions mentioned probably aren’t done by or committed to wives of this day in America. The duties of a wife and mother today have changed some; however, the principles of the passage remain and do describe a wife and mother today who would be of noble character and bring honor to herself, her family and God. If a wife and mother of today reflects the following verses they have done well, “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her,” (Proverbs 31:27-28 NIV).

A woman who watches over the welfare of her family and faithfully cares for her husband and children bringing them good and not harm (v.12), showing them how to love their neighbors (v.20), and regularly sharing and living spiritual principles (v.26) will be a woman of great worth to the entire family and God. In fact God says, “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her,” (v.28 NIV). Most of us probably think the mothers we had while they were living or the mother we have who is still living is worth far more than rubies. And hopefully as husbands we feel the same thing about our wives and particularly as they are mothers to our children. Life does change and years go by but the writer of Proverbs 31 reminds us, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate,” (Proverbs 31:30-31 NIV). We salute all the wives and moms today of noble character and we realize that your worth to your husband and children is worth far more than the world could offer in tons of rubies or valuable jewels. I thank God for the wonderful wife He has given me and for the gracious loving mother she has been to our children. Millie is definitely worth more than tons of rubies and she is worthy of honor and praise.
