IS SLEEP OVERRATED? I don’t know if sleep is overrated or not. I have never had enough of it to make a judgment call on that topic. It seems the experts tell us that we need eight hours of sleep each twenty-four hours in order to maintain a healthy body. If you want to irritate parents with a new born baby just tell them that fact or maybe tell a parent with a sick child. Try telling that to an older person with many aches and pains or someone with an injured body part. I have noticed that teenagers seem to get much more sleep than supposedly required while their parents seem to run a deficit of the sleep needed. Sometimes I wonder if some of our government workers aren’t adding to their required sleep time while at “work.” I have to admit I am an early riser in the morning. If I get five hours sleep I seem to do OK. The bible does give a warning to people like me who get up early. It says, “If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse,” (Proverbs 27:14 NIV). The Good News translation says it this way, “You might as well curse your friends as wake them up early in the morning with a loud greeting.” When I get up early I try not to annoy the other occupants of our household or the neighbors next door. I wish I could say that about some people in some of the neighborhoods where I have lived in the past. Though there are times I would like a little more sleep I must say I like the quietness of the early morning hours and the freshness of the day when I step outside.

The bible has quite a bit to say about sleep. A lot of people lose sleep because of worries and anxieties but Jesus gives some hope for all of us who go through this. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yours souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28-20 NIV). Lost sleep often happens to Christians because we lose sight of who the burden bearer really is. We need to give those things to the Lord before we lie down to sleep and let Him give us the rest of soul and body we need. We need to remember that as the Disciples struggled in the storm while in the boat that Jesus was sleeping in peace in the same boat (Matthew 8:24). When things were turned over to Him the situation changed instantly. There are many Christians today, it appears, who are sleeping quite well in the spiritual realm and they appear to have forgotten the need to be spiritually awake. Though we may often be bodily sleep deprived let us not be spiritually asleep. The bible would encourage us to, “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming,” (Matthew 24:42 ESV). A good night’s sleep is a blessing but to be spiritually asleep is a curse.
