BIRTHDAYS! Last evening my wife and I along with our daughter celebrated our son’s birthday and our son-in-law’s birthday. Just for the fun of it we took the two birthday boys along with us. Of course the birthday boys aren’t boys anymore they are mature middle-aged men and of course it was not really their birthdays. Because the locations where we live are separated by many miles we used this time together to celebrate these two birthdays of these important people in our lives. Usually when our extended family consisting of parents, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are together conversation among the five of us who ate dinner together last night is severally hampered. In light of that the five of us had a quiet dinner together at The Cheesecake Factory since my son had never eaten there before. It was a quiet dinner until we discovered we were seated next to the kitchen entry door and then a family of about twenty people with rambunctious children were seated next to us and were also celebrating a birthday. God was gracious in that He gave us a corner table where we could huddle together and still talk to each other. We had a good evening together, a reasonably good meal, and I must say it was nice to have our son and daughter and son-in-law with us. It doesn’t happen often enough because of where our homes are located in different States. Birthdays should be celebrated as we remember the people whom God has placed in our lives as gifts to us and as each of us realize the life God has allowed each of us to live.
The gift of life is precious. We should preserve it the best we can and we should celebrate it often. An even more important birthday to celebrate is the day of our spiritual birth. Though we may not remember the exact day of the week or the date on the calendar this spiritual birth took place we should know and realize it has happened if it has happened. Jesus said that He is the Way to God the Father and He is the revealer of God’s Truth and He is the one who gives Spiritual Life to the one who seeks it (John 14:6). All of us who are born into this world arrive with a sin nature, an inclination to sin, and at a very early age we begin to willfully sin. As God’s Word says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23 NIV). As parents and individuals we watch this process work out in life. The gracious God who has given us physical life has also given us the secret to spiritual life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Romans 6:23 NIV). A gift is something that is given without cost to the receiver of the gift and so it is with eternal life. The Apostle Paul said, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart hat God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved,” (Romans 10:9-10 NIV). None of us remembers the day or date we were born, we trust the word of others or the documents presented. With spiritual life we may not remember the day of the week or the date on the calendar we received eternal life through new birth in Jesus but it will be demonstrated through our lives if God is residing in us. “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God,” and “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children,” ( Romans 8:14, 16 NIV). Happy Spiritual Birthday to all Christians everywhere! Celebrate often!
