SAD BUT THANKFUL! I received news recently that two of the young men that our missionary ministry teams had opportunity to minister to in Haiti have died. One of them was a former child resident at the orphanage we support in Haiti. Rolex, as he was known, and three of his siblings came to the orphanage about ten years ago and his sister is still a resident at the orphanage. Rolex was a really likeable boy and young man. He had a great sense of humor, was a willing worker when encouraged, hung out with our ministry teams, took care of his siblings, and as a young man went to work doing what he could to support a wife and baby. Rolex had his problems but I really liked Rolex and was really saddened when I heard the news he had died. Young people dying in Haiti is a common occurrence because of the lack of proper health care, accidents, and violence. It appears Rolex was a victim of an undiagnosed illness and improper treatment but because of conditions in Haiti who really knows? God knows the real story but Rolex had opportunities to know and form a relationship with Jesus Christ during his time at the orphanage and I believe I will see him again in heaven.

Young people all around us are dying sad deaths because of the problems in our society; like drugs, alcohol, child abuse, mental disorders, social shaming, and violence. It is easy to dismiss the problems our young people have and just say “it is the way things are today.” We may feel making a difference is beyond our control and that our government should “do something.” It is true that sometimes we are limited in the scope of influence that we may have but the young people that God brings into our lives, like Rolex, we are responsible for and should take any opportunities we have to make a difference in their lives. I think foster parents, grandmothers & grandfathers, and counselors are key people today as many parents are “missing in action” and appear to have multiple problems of their own. If God should bring someone like Rolex into your life please pay attention to the opportunity God is giving you and share God’s love, mercy, and grace with them. A relationship with Jesus produces eternal life even though a life on this earth may be cut short in our estimation. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:16 NIV). I am glad God brought Rolex to the orphanage so he could hear the good news of Jesus, no longer be an orphan and experience that eternal life in heaven right now. It should be our prayer that we as Christians will use “Rolex” moments to aid in the direction of someone’s life to steer them toward heaven because we never know when even young lives will end.
