GRAVE MARKERS! Yesterday, my extended family and I were in an awe-inspiring cemetery to hold a memorial service for my son-in-law’s mother. The place was the South Florida National Cemetery which is a cemetery serving the veterans who have honorably served our nation in branches of our United States military. My son-in-law’s father had served in both the Navy and Air Force during WW2, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired from the Air Force Reserve. He died two years ago and now his wife’s body would be residing in the same grave with him. It seemed fitting as they were married for sixty-five years. As I looked around the beautiful grounds of this cemetery and saw row after neat row of grave markers I was reminded and inspired by the fact that all these men and women represented by the markers had served our country honorably and were willing if need be to give their lives to protect the freedom of our nation. As a nation we should give honor to whom honor is due. This was also a time to see the place where my wife and I will be buried if we should die before the Rapture occurs. It will be an honor to share space with so many other servants of our nation.
Our nation has many faults, most of them due to sinful hearts and poor leadership, but sometimes we do get it right such as in the case of the National Cemeteries. The bible says, “Give to everyone what you owe them: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor,” (Romans 13:7 NIV). I think our nation has lost much of its luster over the last few decades because we have forgotten to heed this simple verse of Scripture. It seems many in our nation will not follow God’s directive in respecting or honoring others. People trash talk our military and our President. People big and small, rich and poor, lie and cheat on their taxes. People disrespect our systems of law and order which have been established to see that we are all equal under the law. Some people think they somehow are set on a pedestal and deserve rights and privileges that the rest of society is not entitled to. As I viewed those grave markers in the National Cemetery, and many of the markers had various religious symbols on them from crosses to stars, anger rose in me concerning those in this country who disrespect and dishonor what these silent souls were willing to die for. We need to pray that God will have mercy on our country, bring us to national repentance, and allow us to follow His simple admonition: “if respect (is due), then respect; if honor (is due), then honor.”
